Book Nineteen Buddhist Poems 1223
Headnote: "Composed on the Wisdom of Equality, when I had a hundred-poem sequence composed and wrote on the Tathāgatas of the five wisdoms among the poems on the Buddhist teaching"
When he had a hundred-poem sequence composed, among the poems on the Buddhist teaching he wrote on the Tathāgatas of the five wisdoms, and this one is on the Wisdom of Equality. That hearts differ from person to person is the delusion of a dream; on waking they are one and the same, he says. The Wisdom of Equality is the Buddha's wisdom that leaves behind all distinction of self and other and sees all things as equal; the differences we see in people's hearts belong only to the dream of delusion, and on awakening all are seen to share one heart.
The author, "Regent and Former Minister of the Right," is Kujō Kanezane. A son of the Regent Fujiwara no Tadamichi, he became regent after serving as minister of the right. He left the diary Gyokuyō and was the elder brother of Jien and the father of Yoshitsune.
1228 and 1229 in this book are poems on the Buddhist teaching composed for this same hundred-poem sequence at Kanezane's house.
