Kimi ga na zo nao arawaren furu yuki ni mukashi no ato wa uzumorenu tomo

English Translation
It is your name
that will shine forth all the more,
though by the falling snow
the traces of days of old
should be buried out of sight
Meaning
It is your name that will shine forth all the more, even if the traces of old are buried under the falling snow.
Commentary
Book Nineteen Buddhist Poems 1226

Headnote: "Reply"
This is the reply to the preceding poem by Jien. It is your name that will appear all the more, though the traces of old be buried under the falling snow, he says. To Jien's grief that the traces of the holy men were vanishing in the snow, he answers that even if those traces are buried, the name of one who stays alone on the mountain and keeps up his practice will on the contrary become known to the world, praising and encouraging Jien.
The author, "Son'en Hōshi," was a monk of Mount Hiei, but the details of his life are not known.
It forms an exchange with the preceding poem, 1225, taking up its "traces of old" and its snow just as they are and setting buried traces against a name that comes to light.

First line, "kimi ga na zo": "kimi" points to Jien, and "zo," an emphatic binding particle, closes with the attributive "n" in the second line.
Second line, "nao arawaren": "nao" means all the more, and "n," the attributive of the conjectural "mu," closes the binding. The poem pauses here.
Third line, "furu yuki ni": it takes up "kesa no shirayuki" in the fifth line of the preceding poem.
Fourth line, "mukashi no ato wa": it takes up "mukashi no ato ya" in the second line of the preceding poem just as it is.
Fifth line, "uzumorenu tomo": "nu" is perfective and "tomo" a concessive conjunctive particle, "even should they be buried." By inversion, the buried traces are set against the name that will come to light.
