Miru hodo wa yume mo yume to mo shirareneba utsutsu mo ima wa utsutsu to omowaji

English Translation
While we are dreaming,
a dream we cannot know
to be a dream;
so the waking world as well
I will no longer take as real
Meaning
While we are dreaming we cannot tell a dream is a dream, so from now on I will not think of the waking world as real either.
Commentary
Book Nineteen Buddhist Poems 1234

Headnote: "Composed on the Vimalakīrti Sutra's ten similes: this body is like a dream"
This poem was composed on another of the Vimalakīrti Sutra's ten similes, that this body is like a dream. While we see it we cannot know a dream is a dream, so I will no longer think of waking life as real, he says. Just as one does not realize in a dream that it is a dream, so this world we take for reality may itself be a dream, and he resolves to let go of clinging to it as something certain. Repeating "dream" and "waking" each in turn, he shapes the poem as an argument.
The author, "Fujiwara no Suketaka Ason," was an official and poet of the late Heian period, but the details of his life are not known.
The next poem, 1235, takes the same simile, this body is like a dream, as its theme; this poem reasons about the line between dream and reality, while the next laments a heart that does not wake though it knows the world is a dream. It is one of the poems on the ten similes that run on from 1202 at the head of the book.

First line, "miru hodo wa": "while we are dreaming."
Second line, "yume mo yume to mo": "a dream as a dream," repeating "yume."
Third line, "shirareneba": "re" is the irrealis of the potential "ru" and "ne" the perfective form of the negative "zu," "since we cannot tell."
Fourth line, "utsutsu mo ima wa": "utsutsu" is waking reality, paired with "yume," dream, in the second line.
Fifth line, "utsutsu to omowaji": "ji" is a negative auxiliary of intention, "I will not think it real." Repeating "utsutsu" from the fourth line, it echoes "yume mo yume to mo" of the second line like a parallel phrase.
