Omoitoku kokoro hitotsu ni narinureba kōri mo mizu mo hedatezarikeri

English Translation
Once the heart that sees
and melts has become one
with itself, I find
that between ice and water
there was no wall at all
Meaning
Once the heart has understood and melted into one, there is no wall between ice and water after all.
Commentary
Book Nineteen Buddhist Poems 1237

Headnote: "Composed on the passions are enlightenment"
This poem was composed on the teaching that the passions are themselves enlightenment. Once the heart that understands has become one, there is no wall between ice and water, she says. The teaching holds that the passions of delusion are enlightenment just as they are; as ice and water differ in form yet are the same in substance, so the passions and enlightenment are not separate things, and she expresses this through the figure of ice melting into water.
The author, "Chūjō of Princess Shokushi's household," was a lady-in-waiting who served Princess Shokushi, daughter of Emperor Go-Shirakawa, but the details of her life are not known.
Where 1218 in this book likens the heart to water that mirrors the moon, this poem likens the heart's condition to ice and water.

First line, "omoitoku": "toku" plays on understanding through enlightenment and on ice melting.
Second line, "kokoro hitotsu ni": "the heart become one," the distinction between delusion and enlightenment falling away.
Third line, "narinureba": "nure" is the perfective form of the perfective "nu," "once it has become."
Fourth line, "kōri mo mizu mo": ice stands for the passions and water for enlightenment, both associated words of "toku," to melt, in the first line.
Fifth line, "hedatezarikeri": "zari" is the continuative of the negative "zu" and "keri" an exclamatory auxiliary of realization, "there was no wall between them."
