Book Nineteen Buddhist Poems 1252
Headnote: "Composed on the Amida Sutra"
This poem was composed on the Amida Sutra, which teaches that in the Pure Land all kinds of birds preach the Law in gentle voices, and the sounds of the jeweled ponds and trees also move all who hear them to think on the Buddha's Law. The songs of the birds are said to blend with the sound of the waves, because they preach the same Law, he says. He sings of the harmony of the Pure Land, where birdsong and the waves of the ponds answer one another because both preach the one Law.
The author, "Taira no Yasuyori," was an official in the service of Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa who joined the Shishigatani plot and was exiled to Kikaigashima, later being pardoned and returning to the capital. He is said to be the author of the Buddhist tale collection Hōbutsushū.
The fifth line of the main text reads "tokeba narikeri," which does not match "kikeba narikeri" in the kana reading line; here the main text is followed.
First line, "tori no ne mo": "the songs of the birds" of paradise.
Second line, "nami no oto ni zo": the waves are those of the jeweled ponds of paradise, and "zo," an emphatic binding particle, closes with the attributive "naru" in the third line.
Third line, "kayou naru": "naru," the attributive of the hearsay "nari," gives "are said to blend." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "onaji minori o": "the very same Law."
Fifth line, "tokeba narikeri": "it is because they preach it," with "keri" an exclamatory auxiliary of realization.
