Commentary
Book Twenty Shinto Poems 1261

Headnote: "Composed when the Middle Counselor Ienari visited Sumiyoshi and composed poems"
This poem was composed when the Middle Counselor Fujiwara no Ienari, the poet's father, visited the Sumiyoshi Shrine and composed poems. The years you must have passed dwelling on the shore of Tsumori since the age of gods are beyond knowing, he says. He praises the endless years the god of Sumiyoshi has dwelt on this shore since the age of gods, too long to count, singing of the god's antiquity and holiness.
The author, "Major Counselor Takasue," is Fujiwara no Takasue. A son of the Middle Counselor Fujiwara no Ienari, he rose to provisional major counselor and founded the Shijō house.
It follows 1257 in this book as a poem on Sumiyoshi, and poems on the Sumiyoshi Shrine continue from here through 1265.

First line, "kamiyo yori": "since the age of the gods."
Second line, "Tsumori no ura ni": "tsumori" plays on Tsumori, a place near Sumiyoshi, and "tsumori," the piling up of years.
Third line, "miyai shite": "miyai" is a god building a shrine and taking up residence.
Fourth line, "henuran toshi no": "nu" is perfective and "ran" the attributive of the present conjectural "ramu," "of the years that must have passed," linked to the piling up of the second line.
Fifth line, "kagiri shirazu mo": "mo" is an exclamatory final particle, "beyond all knowing."
