Book Twenty Shinto Poems 1272
Headnote: "Composed as a poem on the gods in a hundred-poem sequence"
She composed this as a poem on the gods in a hundred-poem sequence. The heart that trusts, thinking surely, has grown hallowed and old, the sacred fence of Kamo, she says. She had once served the gods as high priestess of the Kamo shrines. The heart that has gone on trusting the gods has aged over the long years as the sacred fence of the Kamo Shrine grows hallowed with time, and she sings of her long faith and of the years gone by.
The author, "Princess Shokushi," was a daughter of Emperor Go-Shirakawa who served as high priestess of the Kamo shrines. She later took the tonsure and studied poetry under Fujiwara no Shunzei.
It shares the first line "saritomo to" with the preceding poem, 1271; that poem hangs hopes of promotion on the god of Kataoka, while this one sings of a heart that has long trusted the god of Kamo. The next poem, 1273, also comes from a poetry contest at the Kamo Shrine.
First line, "saritomo to": the same phrase as the first line of the preceding poem, 1271, a heart that clings to hope, thinking "even so, surely."
Second line, "tanomu kokoro wa": "the heart that trusts in the gods."
Third line, "kamisabite": "kamisabu" means to grow old and hallowed, overlaying the aging of the trusting heart with the aging of the sacred fence of the fifth line.
Fourth line, "hisashiku narinu": "nu" is perfective, and the poem pauses here.
Fifth line, "Kamo no mizugaki": "mizugaki" is the fence around a shrine, closing on a noun.
