shows its wondrous sign

Commentary
Book Twenty Shinto Poems 1277

Headnote: "Composed when, at a royal visit to the Hiyoshi Shrine, rain had been falling but cleared just at the appointed hour"
He composed this when a retired emperor visited the Hiyoshi Shrine and the rain that had been falling cleared just at the appointed hour. Toward the high peak of the royal visit the clouds have cleared, and in the sky I see the sign of Hiyoshi, he says. Taking the rain's ending and the sun's breaking through just in time for the visit as a wonder of the Hiyoshi god, he praises the god's might through the "hi," sun, in the shrine's name.
The author, "Nakahara no Moronao," was an official of a family of Confucian classics scholars who served as senior secretary of the Council of State.
It follows the preceding poem, 1276, as a poem on Hiyoshi. Like "kami no shirushi" in 1269 in this book, it sings of the god's wondrous power as a "shirushi," a sign.

First line, "miyuki suru": "where the retired emperor goes."
Second line, "takane no kata ni": "takane" is the peak of Mount Hiei, behind the Hiyoshi Shrine.
Third line, "kumo harete": "the rain clouds having cleared."
Fourth line, "sora ni Hiyoshi no": "hiyoshi" plays on "hi," the sun shining in the sky, and the shrine's name, Hiyoshi.
Fifth line, "shirushi o zo miru": "shirushi" is the god's wondrous power, and "zo," an emphatic binding particle, closes with the attributive "miru."
