all the myriad gods guard
for myriad ages,
unchanging evermore:
such is the name of this mountain
Meaning
All the eight million gods guard our sovereign, unchanging for myriad ages: that is what the name of this mountain, Kamiyama, the Mountain of the Gods, declares.
Commentary
Book Twenty Shinto Poems 1285

Headnote: "Composed on Kamiyama in the province of Ōmi as a song for the sacred dances of the Yuki side at the Great Thanksgiving Festival in the reign of Emperor Takakura, in the first year of Kaō"
He composed this on Kamiyama in Ōmi as a song for the sacred dances of the Yuki side at the Great Thanksgiving Festival of Emperor Takakura in the first year of Kaō. This is the name of the mountain where all the myriad gods guard the sovereign forever, he says. Taking the Yuki place name Kamiyama as "the mountain where the gods guard the emperor," he celebrates a reign protected for all time.
The author, "Naganori, Minister of the Imperial Household," is Fujiwara no Naganori. A Confucian scholar of the Southern House of the Fujiwara, he served as professor of letters and rose to minister of the imperial household.
Like the preceding poem, 1284, it is a Yuki poem on a place in Ōmi by the same author. In singing of the gods' protection through a place name, it shares the spirit of the "many gods" in 1283 and 1287 in this book.

First line, "Suberagi o": "the sovereign."
Second line, "yaoyorozuyo no": a phrase that overlaps "yaoyorozu," the eight million gods, with "yorozuyo," ten thousand ages, meaning the countless gods for countless ages.
Third line, "kami mo mina": "all the gods as well."
Fourth line, "tokiwa ni mamoru": "tokiwa" means forever unchanging, guarding the sovereign for all time.
Fifth line, "yama no na zo kore": "the mountain's name" points to the place name Kamiyama, and "zo" is an emphatic binding particle. It ends by tying the place name to the meaning, saying the mountain is called Kamiyama because the gods guard it.
