10 Rain Beating on the Window
Even on the sixth day of the fifth month the rain did not stop. The prince recalled with feeling her recent reply, which had seemed more troubled than usual, and on the morning after a night of heavy rain he sent a heartfelt note: "The sound of the rain last night was truly frightening."
The woman is Izumi Shikibu, daughter of Ōe no Masamune and, as the wife of Tachibana no Michisada, Governor of Izumi, mother of Koshikibu no Naishi. The Prince of the Dazaifu is Prince Atsumichi, fourth son of Emperor Reizei, so called because he served as Governor-General of the Dazaifu.
When Izumi Shikibu's "Yomosugara nanigoto o ka wa omoitsuru mado utsu ame no oto o kikitsutsu" arrived, the prince thought that she was indeed a woman worth corresponding with and sent back this poem.
Around noon that day, hearing that the river had risen, people went out to see it, and the prince went too. From there he would send Izumi Shikibu another poem.
The opening lines mean "I too was thinking of you just so," turning her "what I thought" into "thinking of you," with an adverb of agreement and a perfective auxiliary. The third line likewise takes up her "the sound of the rain."
The lower verses mean "wondering how it is with the house with no eaves to speak of," where "tsuma" means both the edge of the eaves and a husband to rely on. He imagines her dwelling, with nothing to keep off the rain and no one to protect her, and draws close to her lonely night.
