18 The Tanabata Festival
After the misunderstanding over the rumors, the seventh month came. On the seventh day, the Tanabata festival, many men fond of romantic games sent her poems about the Weaver Maid and the Herdsman, but Izumi Shikibu did not even look at them. On such occasions the prince had never failed to write, she thought, and she was wondering whether he had forgotten her altogether when a letter came from him.
The woman is Izumi Shikibu, daughter of Ōe no Masamune and, as the wife of Tachibana no Michisada, Governor of Izumi, mother of Koshikibu no Naishi. The Prince of the Dazaifu is Prince Atsumichi, fourth son of Emperor Reizei, so called because he served as Governor-General of the Dazaifu.
All the prince sent was the single poem "Omoiki ya tanabatatsume ni mi o nashite ama no kawara o nagamubeshi to wa." Amused to think that he could not let the occasion pass after all, Izumi Shikibu sent back this poem.
Reading her reply, the prince felt that he could not abandon her after all. Toward the end of the seventh month, a letter came from him asking why she did not write to him now and then.
The opening lines mean "I do not even look at the sky you must be gazing at," answering his "gaze," with an auxiliary of present conjecture and a particle marking the least of things.
The remaining lines mean "since I think myself one so shunned by the Weaver Maid," the verb meaning to be avoided as ill-omened, with a conditional of fact. Where he likened himself to the Weaver Maid, she humbles herself as one shunned even by that star of lovers, answering within the festival conceit while conveying the pain of being kept at a distance because of the rumors.
