English Translation
Idly, as the days
of autumn pass by one by one,
I have come to know
the meaning of that strange visit,
so unlike your usual ways
Meaning
As the long, idle days of autumn go by, I have come to understand even that strange, unexpected visit.
Commentary
20 Autumn Dusk

Two or three days after their exchange about the reed wind, at dusk, the prince unexpectedly drove his carriage straight into her grounds and stepped down. Izumi Shikibu had never yet let him see her by daylight and felt terribly embarrassed, but there was nothing to be done. The prince chatted of this and that and went home. Days passed after that, and there was no word from him at all, which made her uneasy.
The woman is Izumi Shikibu, daughter of Ōe no Masamune and, as the wife of Tachibana no Michisada, Governor of Izumi, mother of Koshikibu no Naishi. The Prince of the Dazaifu is Prince Atsumichi, fourth son of Emperor Reizei, so called because he served as Governor-General of the Dazaifu.
Passing the days without word after his unexpected evening visit, Izumi Shikibu composed this poem and sent it with the words "So that is what people are like."
The prince wrote back, "I have been out of touch lately, but still," and returned "Hito wa isa ware wa wasurezu hi o furedo aki no yūgure arishi au koto."

The opening lines mean "idly, the days of autumn," the idleness being the tedium of having nothing to do. In the third line, "furu" suggests both days passing and autumn rain falling.
The lower verses mean "I have come to realize, even that strange thing," with a perfective auxiliary, the strange thing being his recent unexpected visit when he drove his carriage in at dusk. Placed last by inversion, it carries a quiet reproach: that rare visit only made his silence afterward all the more striking.
