Roma-ji

Akikaze wa keshiki fuku dani koishiki ni kakikumoru hi wa iu kata zo naki

English Translation
The autumn wind, even
when it barely stirs at all,
fills me with longing;
and on a day when clouds darken all,
there are no words for it
Meaning
Even a faint autumn breeze fills me with longing; on a day when the whole sky clouds over like this, there are no words for what I feel.
Commentary
22 The Autumn Gale

After her return from Ishiyama, at the end of the eighth month, a fierce wind rose into an autumn gale, and rain fell as well. Izumi Shikibu sat brooding, feeling more forlorn than usual. Just then a letter came from the prince as before. Because it seemed so perfectly attuned to the moment, she felt she could forgive him all his recent neglect.
The woman is Izumi Shikibu, daughter of Ōe no Masamune and, as the wife of Tachibana no Michisada, Governor of Izumi, mother of Koshikibu no Naishi. The Prince of the Dazaifu is Prince Atsumichi, fourth son of Emperor Reizei, so called because he served as Governor-General of the Dazaifu.
On the day the gale raged, the prince's "Nagekitsutsu aki no misora o nagamureba kumo uchisawagi kaze zo hageshiki" arrived, and Izumi Shikibu sent back this poem.
The prince thought that must be so, yet as usual the days passed without a visit. After the twentieth of the ninth month, waking to the dawn moon, the prince realized how long it had been since they met, and went to knock at her gate.

The opening lines mean "even when the autumn wind blows only faintly," where "keshiki" means the merest hint. Echoing the sound of his "hageshiki," fierce, with "keshiki," she answers his violent wind with "even a faint wind," using a particle meaning "even."
The remaining lines mean "I long for you, and on a day when the sky clouds over there are no words," where "clouding over" answers his "clouds in turmoil," sealed by an emphatic construction. If even a slight autumn breeze stirs her longing, how much more on a day of storm; deftly weaving in his words, she voices a longing beyond expression.
