my secret love, my wife

Commentary
27 Frosty Mornings and the Page Boy

On the night of their exchange about the arm-pillow sleeve, the moon also shone very bright and clear, and Izumi Shikibu and the prince each gazed at it until dawn in their separate places. The next morning the prince was having someone ask whether his usual page boy had come, meaning to send a letter. Meanwhile Izumi Shikibu, perhaps moved by the brilliant whiteness of the frost, sent a poem first. The prince was vexed at having been forestalled.
The woman is Izumi Shikibu, daughter of Ōe no Masamune and, as the wife of Tachibana no Michisada, Governor of Izumi, mother of Koshikibu no Naishi. The Prince of the Dazaifu is Prince Atsumichi, fourth son of Emperor Reizei, so called because he served as Governor-General of the Dazaifu. The page boy was the youth who carried the prince's letters to her.
Izumi Shikibu's "Kimi wa kozu tamatama miyuru warawa o ba ike tomo ima wa iwaji to omou ka" arrived with the words "So you really mean to kill him." The prince burst out laughing and sent back this poem.
After the poem he added, "But tell me, have you forgotten the arm-pillow sleeve?" Izumi Shikibu replied with "Hito shirenu kokoro ni kakete shinobu o ba wasuru to ya omou tamakura no sode."

The first line, "you are right," concedes the justice of her plea. The second and third lines mean "I will not kill this boy now," with an auxiliary of negative will, taking up her "boy" directly.
The lower verses mean "because of what my secret love says," the secret love being a lover visited in hiding, here Izumi Shikibu herself. Laughing off his joke about killing the boy, he calls her his secret love and so reaffirms the intimacy between them. The poem brings to a warm close the playful exchange that began with her morning poem about the frost.
