I cannot rise and go

44 The Wild Pink
Even after their exchange about the night he hinted at taking vows, Izumi Shikibu remained deeply sad and could only grieve. Around noon, as she was thinking that she should have made up her mind and gone to his residence sooner, a letter came from the prince.
The woman is Izumi Shikibu, daughter of Ōe no Masamune and, as the wife of Tachibana no Michisada, Governor of Izumi, mother of Koshikibu no Naishi. The Prince of the Dazaifu is Prince Atsumichi, fourth son of Emperor Reizei, so called because he served as Governor-General of the Dazaifu.
When Izumi Shikibu's "Koishiku wa kite mo miyo kashi chihayaburu kami no isamuru michi naranaku ni" arrived, the prince smiled as he read it. Since he had been studying the sutras at that time, he sent back this poem.
Izumi Shikibu replied with "Ware saraba susumite yukan kimi wa tada nori no mushiro o hiromu bakari zo." So the two passed their days exchanging poems.
The opening lines mean "the road to meeting is not forbidden by the gods," taking up her "a road the gods forbid," and the third line means "though it is not," with an adversative particle.
The lower verses mean "since I am seated at the Law, I cannot rise," referring to his place at sutra study, closing with an emphatic particle. Granting her point that the gods do not forbid it, he says playfully that what holds him back is not the gods but the Buddha's teaching, using his sutra study as an excuse for not coming at once.
