Commentary
5 The Governor of Harima's Go Forfeit

In the autumn of Kankō 5 (1008), while Empress Shōshi was staying at the Tsuchimikado mansion for her confinement, the Governor of Harima hosted a feast as the forfeit for losing at go. Murasaki Shikibu happened to have gone home briefly that day. When she later saw the serving trays, she found them elegantly fitted with flower-carved legs, and a poem had been written into the water pattern along the edge of an ornamental shoreline display.
"Governor of Harima" refers to the chief provincial official of Harima, in the southwest of present-day Hyōgo. The text does not name the poet.
At this forfeit banquet, in which the losers of a game of go entertained the winners, the poem was written onto the shoreline ornament set on the feast trays as a token of celebration.
The text continues, "In those days, people carried charming fans as well," and the narrative moves on to the elaborate fans of the time.

The first three lines, "the stone they say one gathers on the white sands of Shirara in the land of Kii," name a beach of white sand in Kii (present-day Wakayama), linking the shoreline ornament to the white stones of go.
The lower verses declare that this very pebble will become a great rock, the verb closing an emphatic construction. The image of a pebble growing into a rock recalls the congratulatory poem of the Kokin Wakashū that wishes a sovereign's reign to last until pebbles become boulders and moss grows upon them, and it carries the same wish for long life and prosperity.
