Commentary
Spring Poems 5

Headnote: "On the topic “In every house they delight in spring”"
The topic in the headnote is the delight that every household takes in spring. The poem sings of the New Year custom of setting up young pines at each gate, and celebrates the way spring has come to every home alike.
The charm lies in seeing spring arrive at each house dressed in the pines raised at the gate. Repeating the same word in yado chō yado conveys, with a festive air, how spring has spread to every home in town.

First line, “kado goto ni”: at each and every gate.
Second line, “tatsuru komatsu ni”: the young pines set up at the gate at New Year, the custom behind today's kadomatsu.
Third line, “kazararete”: spring is pictured as arriving adorned with the pines.
Fourth line, “yado chō yado ni”: chō is a contraction of to iu, so the phrase means every house there is; repeating the word gives the sense that no home is left out.
Fifth line, “haru wa kinikeri”: the exclamatory keri closes with delight at realizing spring has come to every house.
