Tsutsuji saku yama no iwakage yūhaete Ogura wa yoso no na nomi narikeri

English Translation
Where azaleas bloom,
in the shadows of the rocks
glowing in the dusk,
Ogura, the dim, is now
just the name of somewhere else.
Meaning
Where azaleas bloom, the rocky shadows of the mountain glow in the evening light, and Ogura, whose name means dim, seems only the name of some other place.
Commentary
Spring Poems 164

Headnote: "Azaleas are the light of the mountain"
The topic is azaleas as the light of the mountain. Where azaleas bloom, the rocky shadows of the mountain shine bright in the evening sun, and the name of Mount Ogura, which means dim, seems to belong to some other place.
Ogura is a pivot word joining the place name with ogura, dim, expressing how the azaleas glow so red that even at dusk the slope does not darken. The poem treats the topic of light on the mountain through wit drawn from a place name.

First line, “tsutsuji saku”: where azaleas bloom.
Second line, “yama no iwakage”: in the rocky shadows of the mountain, a place normally dark.
Third line, “yūhaete”: glowing in the evening sun, the red of the azaleas brightened by the sunset.
Fourth line, “Ogura wa yoso no”: ogura is a pivot word joining Mount Ogura in Yamashiro with ogura, dim.
Fifth line, “na nomi narikeri”: it was only a name, closing with keri of realization.
