Summer Poems 249
Headnote: "The summer moon in rain"
This poem was composed on the topic of the summer moon in the rain. When the evening shower clears, the raindrops left on the floating lotus leaves rock gently, and the moon lodges and shines in each one. It depicts the fresh scene of a summer night after a shower.
Where the preceding poem told of a pond so covered with lotus that the moon had nowhere to lodge, here the moon lodges in the drops on the lotus leaves, pairing lotus that leaves no room for the moon with lotus that holds it.
First line, “yūdachi no”: the sudden heavy shower of a summer afternoon or evening.
Second line, “harureba tsuki zo”: when it cleared, the moon; zo emphasizes the moon.
Third line, “yadorikeru”: zo is answered by the attributive keru, expressing the realization that the moon was lodged there; the poem breaks after the third line and the lower verse is inverted.
Fourth line, “tama yurisuuru”: rocking the beads of rain as they rest on the leaves.
Fifth line, “hasu no ukiha ni”: the lotus leaves floating on the water, naming afterwards where the moon lodges.
