Samazama no aware o komete kozue fuku kaze ni aki shiru miyamabe no sato

English Translation
In so many ways
holding the heart's deep feeling,
blowing through treetops,
the wind tells me autumn's come
to this hamlet by the hills.
Meaning
By the wind that blows through the treetops, carrying so many kinds of quiet, moving feeling, this village at the foot of the deep mountains knows that autumn has come.
Commentary
Autumn Poems 254

Headnote: "First autumn at a mountain dwelling"
The topic asks for the first touch of autumn as felt in a mountain home. In the village near the deep mountains, the wind sweeping through the treetops carries many kinds of aware, and by that wind the village knows autumn has come. Placed at the head of the autumn section, the poem shows a life in the hills that senses the turn of the season in the feel of the wind before any change in the scenery.
The summer section ended with 253 in Book Two, a poem on a wind already cool with autumn, and the autumn section likewise begins with the wind. The arrangement hands the season over from one section to the next by way of the wind.

First line, “samazama no”: of many kinds, modifying aware in the second line and pointing to the variety of autumn's moods.
Second line, “aware o komete”: aware is the quiet, stirring feeling of things; the wind is said to blow filled with it, as though it had a heart.
Third line, “kozue fuku”: blowing through the tips of the branches, evoking the sound of wind passing over the tall trees around the village.
Fourth line, “kaze ni aki shiru”: knowing autumn by the wind; the particle ni marks the means. Like kaze no keshiki ni in the next poem, it makes the wind the herald of autumn.
Fifth line, “miyamabe no sato”: the poem ends on a noun, naming the poet's mountain village. The same closing line appears in 301, 427 and 474, so the village is seen again and again as autumn deepens.
