Akuru made yoi yori sora ni kumo nakute mata koso kakaru tsuki mizaritsure

English Translation
From dusk until dawn,
there was never once a cloud
anywhere in the sky:
never before have I seen
a moon as fine as tonight.
Meaning
From early evening until dawn there was not a single cloud in the sky; never before have I seen such a moon.
Commentary
Autumn Poems 315

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "The moon"
This poem continues the topic of the moon. From early evening until the night was over there was not a single cloud in the sky, and never before had the poet seen such a splendid moon. The heart that in the poems before resented clouds and grieved over the setting moon is here fulfilled by a night of cloudless moonlight.
Where 310 wished how happy it would be if there were no clouds, this poem tells of the night when that wish came true, so the wish and its fulfilment answer each other.

First line, “akuru made”: until the night breaks, which with yoi yori in the second line means all night long.
Second line, “yoi yori sora ni”: in the sky from early evening.
Third line, “kumo nakute”: with no clouds, nothing to hide the moon.
Fourth line, “mata koso kakaru”: mata with the negative means ever before, koso forms a kakari-musubi with tsure in the last line, and kakaru means such as this.
Fifth line, “tsuki mizaritsure”: the perfective form of tsu answering koso, emphasizing that such a moon had never been seen.
