Nabete nao tokoro no na o ya oshimuran Akashi wa wakite tsuki no sayakeki

English Translation
Does it, after all,
cherish the good name of each place,
everywhere alike?
At Akashi, bright by name,
the moon shines with special clearness.
Meaning
Does the moon, after all, everywhere take care to live up to the name of each place? At Akashi, true to its bright name, the moon shines especially clear.
Commentary
Autumn Poems 325

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "The moon at a famous place"
This poem continues the topic of the moon at a famous place. Does the moon everywhere, after all, take care not to shame the name of each place? At Akashi the moon shines especially bright and clear, just as its name says. Playing on the place name Akashi and akashi, bright, it is a witty poem joining the name of a famous place with the brightness of the moon.
After Kiyomi Bay in the preceding poem, the moon of Akashi in Harima Province is sung here. The moon at Akashi appears again in 376.

First line, “nabete nao”: nabete means generally, and nao still, after all.
Second line, “tokoro no na o ya”: the name of the place; ya is a question particle answering ran in the third line.
Third line, “oshimuran”: does it cherish its name, taking care not to shame it; the poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, “Akashi wa wakite”: akashi is a pivot word joining the place name Akashi with akashi, bright, and wakite means especially.
Fifth line, “tsuki no sayakeki”: sayakeshi means bright and clear, the attributive ending leaving a lingering note.
