Ko no ma moru ariake no tsuki o nagamureba sabishisa souru mine no matsukaze

English Translation
Through the gaps in trees,
as I gaze upon the moon
lingering till dawn,
adding to my loneliness,
wind among the mountain pines.
Meaning
As I gaze at the dawn moon glimmering through the trees, the wind in the pines on the peak adds to my loneliness.
Commentary
Autumn Poems 345

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "When I composed many poems on the moon"
This is the ninth poem in the moon series. Toward dawn, as the poet gazes at the lingering moon glimpsed through the trees, the sound of the wind in the pines on the peak comes to him and deepens his loneliness. The light of the dawn moon and the sound of the pine wind deepen the loneliness of the mountains at daybreak.
The opening ko no ma moru ariake no tsuki is almost the same as the opening of 398, where autumn leaves are added to the view of the dawn moon. To the same dawn moon, this poem adds the sound of the pine wind and 398 the color of autumn leaves, so a pairing for the ear and one for the eye answer each other.

First line, “ko no ma moru”: shining through the gaps between the trees.
Second line, “ariake no tsuki o”: a hypermetric line of eight syllables, the moon still in the sky after dawn.
Third line, “nagamureba”: as I gaze, lost in thought, the perfective form with ba.
Fourth line, “sabishisa souru”: adding further to loneliness.
Fifth line, “mine no matsukaze”: ending on a noun, the wind in the pines on the peak and its sound.
