Autumn Poems 381
Headnote: "On the topic of delighting in the moon in the intercalary ninth month"
The headnote tells us this was composed on the topic of delighting in the moon in the intercalary ninth month, a year when autumn had an extra month. Looking at the moon in a year when autumn has grown by a month, the poet finds his heart, never tired of the moon, drawn up into the sky more than ever. It expresses the joy of a year in which the autumn moon can be enjoyed for longer.
Like kokoro mo sora ni ukarete zo sumu in 365, it sings of a heart drawn up into the sky by longing for the moon. The rare turn of the calendar that adds a month is taken as a joy that brings more chances to enjoy the moon.
First line, “tsuki mireba”: when I see the moon, the perfective form with ba.
Second line, “aki kuwawareru”: with autumn increased by a month; ru is the attributive of the continuative ri, a year with an intercalary ninth month.
Third line, “toshi wa mata”: in that year again.
Fourth line, “akanu kokoro mo”: aku is to be satisfied, and with the negative nu, the heart that never tires of it.
Fifth line, “sora ni zo arikeru”: sora ni means in the sky and also absent-minded; the attributive keru answers zo.
