hidden by the clouds again,
for the moon's bright light

here upon Futamura Hill.

Autumn Poems 383
Headnote: "Waiting long for the moon"
The topic is waiting a long time for the moon. The poet waited for the moon to come over the mountain rim, and no sooner has it risen than it hides behind clouds, so on Futamura Hill he must wait for it twice over. The length of the wait is expressed through waiting twice.
The futa, two, in the place name Futamura echoes the doubled waiting and is linked with kasanete. The next poem also sings of waiting for a break in the clouds, so poems on the topic of waiting for the moon follow one another.
First line, “idenagara”: though it has come out over the rim.
Second line, “kumo ni kakururu”: hiding behind the clouds.
Third line, “tsukikage o”: the moon, its light.
Fourth line, “kasanete matsu ya”: waiting once more, with ya an exclamatory particle; the two waits are for the moonrise and for the clouds to clear.
Fifth line, “Futamura no yama”: ending on a noun, Futamura Hill, a famous place in Owari, whose futa, two, echoes kasanete in the fourth line.
