Autumn Poems 390
Headnote: "Autumn flowers before the moon"
The topic is autumn flowers before the moon. The maidenflower wears the white moonlight layered over her yellow flowers, and beneath the outer skirt she has put on hang drops of dew. Likening the maidenflower to an elegantly dressed woman, the poem pictures the moonlight as a skirt layered on top and the dew as ornaments beneath it.
The device of likening the maidenflower to a woman, carried through the poems from 276, is linked here with moonlight. The next poem, on the same topic, also sings of the maidenflower in the moonlight.
First line, “tsuki no iro o”: a hypermetric line of six syllables, the color of the moonlight.
Second line, “hana ni kasanete”: layering it over the flowers, likening it to the layering of robes.
Third line, “ominaeshi”: the subject of the following lines, likened to a woman.
Fourth line, “uwamo no shita ni”: uwamo is an outer skirt, the moonlight seen as a skirt the maidenflower has layered on.
Fifth line, “tsuyu o kaketaru”: taru is the attributive of the continuative tari, having dew hung on her; the attributive ending lingers.
