Ko no ma moru ariake no tsuki no sayakeki ni momiji o soete nagametsuru kana

English Translation
Through the gaps in trees
in the clear light of the moon
lingering till dawn,
with the autumn leaves as well
I have gazed upon the scene.
Meaning
In the clear light of the dawn moon glimmering through the trees, I gazed on with the autumn leaves added to the view.
Commentary
Autumn Poems 398

Headnote: "Autumn leaves before the moon"
The topic is autumn leaves before the moon. Where the light of the dawn moon glimmering through the trees shone bright and clear, the poet gazed, lost in thought, with the color of the moonlit leaves added to it. He savors at once two beauties of autumn, moonlight and the color of the leaves.
The upper verse is almost the same as the opening of 345, where the sound of the pine wind on the peak deepens the loneliness of the dawn moon. This poem adds autumn leaves to the same dawn moon, adding beauty, so the pine wind heard by the ear and the leaves seen by the eye form a pair.

First line, “ko no ma moru”: shining through the gaps between the trees, the same as the first line of 345.
Second line, “ariake no tsuki no”: a hypermetric line of eight syllables, of the moon still in the sky after daybreak.
Third line, “sayakeki ni”: sayakeshi means bright and clear, in that brightness.
Fourth line, “momiji o soete”: adding the autumn leaves, the beauty of the leaves joining the moonlight.
Fifth line, “nagametsuru kana”: tsuru is the attributive of the perfective tsu and kana is exclamatory, how I gazed.
