Nagori ōki mutsugoto tsukite kaeriyuku hito o ba kiri mo tachihedatekeri

English Translation
Our fond talk is done,
full of all we hate to leave,
and the one going home
now the mist as well has risen
and has screened away from me.
Meaning
Our intimate talk, so hard to end, is over at last, and now the mist too has risen to screen from view the one who is going home.
Commentary

Headnote: "Mist screening a departing traveller"
The topic is mist screening off a traveller who is leaving. The fond talk that was so hard to end is over at last, and as the friend goes home, the mist too rises to screen him off and hide him from view, adding to the sorrow of parting. The grief of farewell is deepened by the mist that hides the departing figure.
In the poems before, the mist hid the geese, but here it screens a departing person, so the poems on mist widen to human affairs.

First line, “nagori ōki”: a hypermetric line of six syllables, so full of reluctance to part.
Second line, “mutsugoto tsukite”: mutsugoto is intimate talk, and that too has come to an end.
Third line, “kaeriyuku”: going home after parting, modifying hito in the fourth line.
Fourth line, “hito o ba kiri mo”: mo implies not only the grief of parting but the mist too.
Fifth line, “tachihedatekeri”: the mist has risen and screened him off; tatsu includes the rising of the mist, and keri is exclamatory.
