Autumn Poems 477
Headnote: "When Jakuzen visited Kōya and we composed on the topic of autumn leaves in deep autumn"
The headnote tells us this was composed when Jakuzen visited Mount Kōya and poems were written on the topic of autumn leaves in deep autumn. Jakuzen was a poet who was a close friend of Saigyō. The peaks that showed a brocade of blossoms in spring are now being dyed with autumn colors by the showers, so these deep mountains, the poet finds, have held many kinds of brocade. Spring cherry blossoms and autumn leaves are both seen as the mountain's brocade.
The opening samazama no is the same as the first line of 254, the head of this book. There the wind blowing through the treetops held many kinds of aware, while here the treetops of the deep mountains hold many kinds of brocade, so the head of the book and its closing part answer each other.
First line, “samazama no”: of many kinds, the same as the first line of 254 at the head of this book.
Second line, “nishiki arikeru”: keru is the attributive of the exclamatory keri, how there were brocades.
Third line, “miyama kana”: kana is exclamatory, these deep mountains; the poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, “hana mishi mine o”: shi is the attributive of the past auxiliary ki, the peaks where I viewed blossoms in spring.
Fifth line, “shigure sometsutsu”: tsutsu shows continuation, as the showers go on dyeing them, giving afterward by inversion what the brocades are.
