Winter Poems 491
Headnote: "At Chōrakuji, when people were composing on the topic 'thinking of autumn leaves at night'"
The headnote tells us this was composed at Chōrakuji in the Higashiyama hills of the capital, when people were writing on the topic of thinking of autumn leaves at night. Unable to see the leaves in the dark, the poet imagines them while listening to the storm blowing all night, and laments that the storm scatters, without the least regret, the treetop leaves that the winter rain has so carefully dyed.
This poem opens the winter section. Book Three ended with 490, which sensed the departure of autumn in dew turning to frost, and this book begins with a storm scattering the last of autumn's colored leaves, handing the season over from autumn to winter.
First line, “yomosugara”: all night long, answering the night of the topic.
Second line, “oshige naku fuku”: blowing with no sign of regret, the fierceness of a storm that does not hesitate to scatter the leaves.
Third line, “arashi kana”: kana is exclamatory, and the poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, “wazato shigure no”: wazato means deliberately, with special care. The early winter rain was thought to color the leaves, and the phrase stresses the trouble it took to dye them.
Fifth line, “somuru kozue o”: the treetops it dyed; the object of the blowing is placed after the exclamation, an inversion. This answers the autumn leaves of the topic.
