Winter Poems 513
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "When composing winter poems"
This is the fourth of four winter poems. The poet wishes there were someone besides himself who could endure the loneliness of a mountain village in winter, and says that if there were, he would like to set their huts side by side. Though resolved to bear his solitude, he longs for someone who shares the same heart. The crisp rhythm, breaking after both the third and the fourth lines, is also notable.
The poem was included in the winter section of the Shin Kokin Wakashū. It draws on Minamoto no Muneyuki's poem in the Kokin Wakashū, in which loneliness deepens in a mountain village in winter when both visitors and grasses wither away, and recasts that loneliness from the side of one who endures it.
First line, “sabishisa ni”: in loneliness, the loneliness of the winter mountain village.
Second line, “taetaru hito no”: taru is the attributive of the continuative tari, one who is enduring.
Third line, “mata mo are na”: a hypermetric line of six syllables, with na expressing a wish, if only there were one more; the poem breaks here.
Fourth line, “iori naraben”: n expresses intention, let us set our huts side by side; the poem breaks here too.
Fifth line, “fuyu no yamazato”: the poem ends on a noun naming the place where he would build. Poems 515 and 558 in this book end with the same line, fuyu no yamazato.
