Winter Poems 542
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "When composing poems on snow"
This is the fifth of six poems on snow. In winter, when deutzia does not bloom, the snow has happily made it flower along the fence around the dwelling. Likening the snow on the fence to deutzia, the poet rejoices in the out-of-season flowers as a gift from the snow.
Like the preceding poem, this one likens snow on a fence to deutzia; where that poem described the feeling of the comparison, this one personifies the snow as making the flowers bloom and tells of the joy of it.
First line, “ori naranu”: ori is the season, not their season.
Second line, “meguri no kaki no”: meguri is the surroundings, the fence around the dwelling.
Third line, “unohana o”: the deutzia, the snow on the fence likened to its flowers.
Fourth line, “ureshiku yuki no”: happily, the snow, personified as making the flowers bloom.
Fifth line, “sakasetsuru kana”: tsuru is the attributive of the perfective tsu, and kana is exclamatory, how it has made them bloom.
