Winter Poems 573
Headnote: "The year's end at a mountain dwelling"
The topic is the year's end at a mountain dwelling. Having replaced the woven brushwood door of his mountain hut with a new one, the poet keeps on waiting for the year to open, as one opens a door. He finds the preparation for the new year in the renewing of his humble door, linking the door with the opening of the year.
Following 571 in this book, which told of waiting for a spring he had renounced, this poem too tells of waiting for the new year, so among the poems on the year's end the waiting heart recurs.
First line, “atarashiki”: new, conveying the mood of making ready for the new year.
Second line, “shiba no amido o”: amido is a rough door woven of bamboo or brushwood.
Third line, “tatekaete”: tatekau is to replace with something new and set it up.
Fourth line, “toshi no akuru o”: akuru is a pivot word, for the year to open and for a door to open, an associated word for the woven door of the second line.
Fifth line, “machiwataru kana”: machiwataru is to keep on waiting, and kana is exclamatory.
