Love Poems 592
Headnote: "Resentment"
The topic is resentment. If these were tears shed in secret longing for the beloved's kindness, the poet would wrap them away so that nothing overflowing his sleeves could betray him; but they are tears of resentment and cannot be hidden. The counterfactual conveys the depth of his bitterness.
First line, “morasaji to”: so as not to let it leak out; ji expresses negative intention.
Second line, “sode ni amaru o”: the tears too many for the sleeves to hold.
Third line, “tsutsumamashi”: I would wrap them away; mashi is counterfactual and answers seba at the end. The poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, “nasake o shinobu”: nasake is the beloved's kindness, and shinobu to long for in secret.
Fifth line, “namida nariseba”: if they were such tears, returning in inversion to the upper verse. The unspoken truth is that these are tears of resentment, answering the topic.
