Waga namida shigure no ame ni taguebaya momiji no iro no sode ni magaeru

English Translation
These tears that I weep,
to the early winter rain
I would liken them:
like the hue of autumn leaves
my sleeves are now mistaken.
Meaning
I would liken my tears to the early winter rain, for my sleeves are dyed until they could be mistaken for the color of autumn leaves.
Commentary
Love Poems 605

Headnote: "Love expressed through autumn leaves"
The topic is love expressed through autumn leaves. As the early winter rain turns the leaves red, so the tears of love have dyed the poet's sleeves until they might be mistaken for autumn leaves; therefore he would liken his tears to the rain. The convention of love poetry in which tears of blood dye the sleeves crimson is laid over the pairing of rain and colored leaves.

First line, “waga namida”: my tears.
Second line, “shigure no ame ni”: to the early winter rain, which was thought to color the leaves.
Third line, “taguebaya”: taguu is to liken, and baya expresses one's own wish; the poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, “momiji no iro no”: the color of the autumn leaves, answering the topic.
Fifth line, “sode ni magaeru”: magau is to look so alike as to be mistaken; my sleeves are dyed until they could pass for the leaves.
