Love Poems 624
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "The moon"
Spending sleepless night after night gazing at the moon, the poet comes to know anew just how deep the brooding of his love is. The nightly vigil with the moon becomes itself the measure of his love's depth.
First line, “mono omou”: brooding, troubled by love.
Second line, “kokoro no take zo”: take is the full extent, the depth of the heart; the binding particle zo is answered by the attributive nuru in the third line.
Third line, “shirarenuru”: re is spontaneous: it comes home to me of itself. The poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, “yonayona tsuki o”: night after night the moon, answering the topic.
Fifth line, “nagameakashite”: nagamu is to gaze while lost in thought; an inversion giving the reason for the upper verse.
