Love Poems 631
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "The moon"
The tears wept silently so that no one should hear have gathered on the inside of the sleeve like the water of a bay, and the autumn moon lodges its reflection there without the least hesitation. Sode no ura joins the inside of the sleeve with a bay, and tatau, to brim, is associated with the bay, so that the tears are pictured as a seashore scene.
First line, “shinobine no”: shinobine is weeping with stifled voice so as not to be heard.
Second line, “namida tatauru”: tatau is to fill to the brim, associated with the bay.
Third line, “sode no ura ni”: ura is a pivot word joining the inside of the sleeve with a bay; the line has an extra syllable.
Fourth line, “nazumazu yadoru”: nazumu is to hesitate: lodging there without hesitating.
Fifth line, “aki no yo no tsuki”: ending on a noun, the moon mirrored in the bay of tears, answering the topic.
