Kuma mo naki orishimo hito o omoiidete kokoro to tsuki o yatsushitsuru kana

English Translation
When there was no shade,
at that moment, of my love
I found myself thinking,
and of my own heart the moon
I have made dim and so worn!
Meaning
Just when the moon shone without a shadow, I remembered you, and of my own accord I made the moon look dim and worn with my tears.
Commentary
Love Poems 644

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "The moon"
At the very moment the moon was shining without a shadow, the poet remembered his beloved, and by weeping of his own accord he dimmed the moon and made it look shabby. The lament that he has spoiled the moon not through anyone else's fault but from his own heart reveals how irrepressible his longing is.
It was included in the fourth book of love poems of the Shinkokinshū.

First line, “kuma mo naki”: kumanashi is without shadow, the moon shining bright.
Second line, “orishimo hito o”: orishimo is at that very moment.
Third line, “omoiidete”: remembering the beloved; the third line has six syllables, one too many.
Fourth line, “kokoro to tsuki o”: kokoro to means of my own heart, of my own accord; this answers the topic.
Fifth line, “yatsushitsuru kana”: yatsusu is to make shabby, lamenting that tears have dimmed the moon.
