I do not think of it as
any fault of yours,

how my sleeves grow wet with tears!

Love Poems 680
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Love"
Knowing his own station well, the poet does not blame the beloved for his unrequited love. Yet his sleeves grow wet with tears as though wearing a look of resentment toward her. Personifying the sleeves, the poem shows tears revealing a resentment the heart does not intend.
Like 'my tears with a look of reproach' in 628 of this book, it gives a face to tears and sleeves.
First line, “mi o shireba”: since I know my station.
Second line, “hito no toga ni wa”: toga is a fault: as her fault.
Third line, “omowanu ni”: ni is concessive: though I do not think so.
Fourth line, “uramigao ni mo”: uramigao is a look of resentment, personifying the sleeves.
Fifth line, “nururu sode kana”: kana is exclamatory, lamenting the sleeves wet with tears.
