Miscellaneous Poems 718
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Miscellany"
The poet has not the slightest wish to live on, being a wretched self that cannot even bear to loathe the world. It speaks of a heart weary of life, like the 'nagaraemauki' of the poems just before.
First line, “nagaraen to”: to live on, a line of six syllables, using the same verb nagarau as 'nagaraemauki' in 713.
Second line, “omou kokoro zo”: the binding particle zo is answered by the attributive naki in the third line.
Third line, “tsuyu mo naki”: tsuyu mo is not in the least; naki closes the zo construction, and the poem breaks here.
Fourth line, “itou ni dani mo”: dani is even; even loathing the world.
Fifth line, “taenu ukimi wa”: this wretched self that cannot bear it, inverted to take up the first three lines.
