not yet cast off the world, the
darkness closing in,
to wander and lose one's way,
is it you alone? I too.

Headnote: "Reply"
This is Saigyō's reply. To lose one's way with darkness shut inside a heart that has not let go of the world is not yours alone, he says; I am the same. Taking the other's fear as his own, he stands beside them as a fellow wanderer, picking up 'darkness' and 'losing one's way' from the preceding poem.
First line, “yo o sutenu”: not having cast off the world, answering 'mi o suteyarade' in the preceding poem.
Second line, “kokoro no uchi ni”: within the heart.
Third line, “yami komete”: shutting in the darkness, taking up 'nagaki yami' of the preceding poem.
Fourth line, “mayowan koto wa”: the losing of one's way, taking up 'mata mayoinan.'
Fifth line, “kimi hitori ka wa”: ka wa is rhetorical, is it you alone? I am the same.
