Headnote: "Sent to someone who seemed not entirely without thought for the life to come"
This was sent to someone who seemed not wholly unmindful of the next life. Those in this world with true feeling, like the moon that lingers into dawn, do not lose their way in the dark, the poet says, inviting the other's heart toward the Buddhist path.
First line, “yo no naka ni”: in this world.
Second line, “kokoro ariake no”: ariake is a pivot word joining ari, having feeling, and ariake, the moon lingering into dawn.
Third line, “hito wa mina”: all such people.
Fourth line, “kakute yami ni wa”: thus, in the dark, the dawn moon of the second line set against the darkness.
Fifth line, “mayowanu mono o”: mono o is an exclamation of contrast, and yet they do not lose their way.
