Headnote: "Hearing that the Major Captain of the Right Kinyoshi had lost his mother while still in mourning for his father, I sent condolences from Kōya"
Hearing that Fujiwara no Kinyoshi, Major Captain of the Right, had lost his mother while still in mourning for his father Saneyoshi, Saigyō sent this from Mount Kōya. With the mourning for father and mother overlapping, Kinyoshi must wear wisteria robes one upon another; let that be your chance, he says, to dye your heart too in the color of the Way, urging him to make his grief an occasion for faith.
First line, “kasane kiru”: worn one upon another, the mourning for father and mother overlapping.
Second line, “fuji no koromo o”: robes of coarse wisteria fiber, mourning dress.
Third line, “tayori nite”: as an occasion, a means.
Fourth line, “kokoro no iro o”: the heart's color, set against the color of the robes in the second line.
Fifth line, “someyo to zo omou”: zo is answered by omou; I think, let it be dyed.
