Headnote: "Reply"
This is the reply from the person in the preceding headnote, who was grieving in the same way. On top of last year's showers, never cleared, that is, last year's tears, the sky is darkened once more by showers circling the mountains, the writer says, entrusting the layering of sorrows to the rain. It takes up 'last year and this year' from the preceding poem.
First line, “hareyaranu”: never wholly clearing, grief that does not fade.
Second line, “kozo no shigure no”: shigure are the passing showers of late autumn and early winter, a figure for tears, taking up last year from the preceding poem.
Third line, “ue ni mata”: and on top of it again, answering 'this year too.'
Fourth line, “kakikurasaruru”: darkened completely, the heart shut in by grief.
Fifth line, “yamameguri kana”: yamameguri is the showers moving from mountain to mountain; kana is exclamatory.
