Headnote: "When the Lady Mikawa was serving at his residence after his death, on the thirteenth night of the ninth month, on behalf of another"
After Retired Emperor Nijō's death, the Lady Mikawa served at his residence, and on the bright moon night of the thirteenth of the ninth month the poet composed this on behalf of another, to send to her. Longing for the form of the departed emperor, do you face the moon and weep aloud? he asks, feeling for her grief and joining the hiding of the moon with the emperor's passing.
First line, “kakurenishi”: kakure is a pivot word joining the death of a noble and the moon going into hiding.
Second line, “kimi ga mikage no”: mikage is a pivot word joining the emperor's form and the moonlight.
Third line, “koishisa ni”: for longing.
Fourth line, “tsuki ni mukaite”: facing the moon, the moon of the thirteenth night.
Fifth line, “ne o ya nakuran”: ne o naku is to weep aloud; ya and ran form a binding construction.
