Headnote: "On the topic of expressing my thoughts on an old home, when Tamenari was composing at his house at Tokiwa and I happened to be there"
The topic is expressing one's feelings on an old, abandoned home. When Fujiwara no Tamenari was composing on this topic at his house at Tokiwa, Saigyō happened to be present and composed this. Let us part the overgrown field into a few clumps and once more call back how it used to be, he says, filled with the wish to revive bygone days in the ruined garden of the old house.
First line, “shigeki no o”: the field overgrown with grass, the garden of the old home.
Second line, “iku hitomura ni”: hitomura is a single clump of grass.
Third line, “wakenashite”: dividing it.
Fourth line, “sara ni mukashi o”: the past once again, answering the topic.
Fifth line, “shinobikaesan”: n expresses intention, let me call it back.
