Headnote: "Reply"
This is Saigyō's reply. In my sorrow at never meeting him again in this world, it was I, who had urged him to call on the Buddha at the end, whose heart was thrown into turmoil, he says. Taking up 'midarezu' from the preceding poem, he says that, unlike the holy man reborn in peace, his own heart was troubled.
First line, “kono yo nite”: in this world.
Second line, “mata au majiki”: maji is negative conjecture, never to meet again.
Third line, “kanashisa ni”: for sorrow.
Fourth line, “susumeshi hito zo”: the one who urged him in prayer, Saigyō himself; zo is answered by shi in the fifth line.
Fifth line, “kokoro midareshi”: my heart was disturbed, set against 'midarezu' at the head of the preceding poem.
