Headnote: "Reply"
This is Saigyō's reply. Going and returning, it all passed without my knowing what was what, as though I walked a mountain path in a dream, he says. Taking up 'the mountain path back' from the preceding poem, he tells how in his grief at losing his friend everything felt like a dream.
First line, “ika ni to mo”: how it was.
Second line, “omoiwakazu zo”: omoiwaku is to discern; zo is a binding particle.
Third line, “suginikeru”: the attributive closing the zo construction; it passed by; the poem breaks here.
Fourth line, “yume ni yamaji o”: on a mountain path in a dream, taking up 'kaeru yamaji' in the preceding poem.
Fifth line, “yuku kokochi shite”: as though walking it, inverted to follow the third line.
