Fushishizumu mi ni wa kokoro no araba koso sara ni nageki mo sou kokochi seme
- English Translation

If in this self of
mine, sunk down in grief, there were
any heart left still,
then I might well feel it so,
grief heaped up upon grief.

- If there were any heart left in me, sunk down in grief as I am, then perhaps I might feel grief heaped upon grief.

Headnote: "Reply"
This is the reply, its author unnamed. If there were still a heart in me, sunk down in grief as I am, I might feel grief added to grief, the writer says, telling of a sorrow so deep that the heart itself seems lost. It answers the preceding 'sara ni nageki ya sou kokochi suru' almost word for word.
First line, “fushishizumu”: lying sunk in grief.
Second line, “mi ni wa kokoro no”: a heart in this self.
Third line, “araba koso”: only if there were; koso is answered by me in the fifth line.
Fourth line, “sara ni nageki mo”: taking up 'sara ni nageki ya' of the preceding poem.
Fifth line, “sou kokochi seme”: I might feel it added, answering the close of the preceding poem.
