Headnote: "Reply / That very day, after changing his appearance, he sent this reply, which was very moving"
This is Noritsuna's reply. A note adds that he took vows that same day and changed his appearance, and then replied in this way, which seemed very moving. Only think of my heart, which in sorrow at today's parting has changed its form to remember him, he writes, telling how grief at losing his master led him to take vows.
First line, “omoe tada”: only think of it, a call in the imperative; the poem breaks here.
Second line, “kyō no wakare no”: taking up today and parting from the preceding poem.
Third line, “kanashisa ni”: in the sorrow of it.
Fourth line, “sugata o kaete”: changing my form to that of a monk.
Fifth line, “shinobu kokoro o”: the heart that remembers him, taking up 'shinoban' and inverted to follow the first line.
